About the Ascension of the Lord
This Feast Day, celebrated on the fortieth day after Easter, commemorates the time when Jesus gathered His disciples at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and ascended into Heaven before their eyes. It was not so much a journey in space and time, but a journey beyond our understanding of space and time into the dimension of God's life. Jesus is out of our time and in God's time. This event is significant because it demonstrates that those of lowly human nature, like Christ, can also ascend. We can aspire to a similar elevation. Celebrating and meditating upon the Lord's Ascension reminds us that, like Christ, our final goal is the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, this Feast Day challenges us to keep our minds and hearts focused on Heaven, and to take the necessary steps to assure that where Jesus is, we also may be one day.
